Ivan Illich (1926-2002) came to world-wide renown in the 1970s for a series of books critical of such institutions as schools, medicine, transport, and professional services. Illich’s acute insights into the present allowed him to foresee the ecological devastation and political impotence that is now obvious. Illich’s distinctive diagnosis of the historical origins of the present came from confronting the unexamined assumptions on which contemporary societies rest. This site is not meant to popularize or promote Illich. Instead, it is a platform for participants who want to ‘think with Illich’ and discuss ideas, share references, and deepen understanding. Thinking with Illich means heeding his call to question modern certainties to discover ways of living within limits shaped by natural thresholds.
